How do modular kayaks work?

Kayaks that can be taken apart and put back together in a few seconds are called modular kayaks. Solo can be made into tandem with the addition of an extra midsection piece, and even multi-person by adding an additional midsection.

Recreational kayaks, fishing kayaks, and touring kayaks are the most commonly used modular kayaks. We will mention Tequila among the most popular brands! The GTX (recreational, fishing kayak), the Martini GTX (recreational kayak), the Mercury GTX (touring kayak), and the Tequila! The GTX Angler (fishing kayak) is from Point 65 Sweden, and the Snap-On Top and Scout are from Snap Kayaks USA.

It has been our pleasure to look into different types of kayaks, such as solo, tandem, sit-on, and sit-in versions. Each model was reviewed according to its recommended purpose, such as fishing, weekend trips, and sports. Furthermore, we have discussed pros and cons based on features such as stability, maneuverability, speed, and tracking.

2. The Point 65 Martini GTX modular sit-in kayak

The Martini GTX is one of the best multipurpose kayaks on the market. A high-quality kayak is marketed by the manufacturers as one that will offer versatility, performance, and portability.

Kayaking is something you’ve never done before? Would you like to go fishing? Have you ever been on a ride with your family before? If not, this is the best choice for you. In addition to being spacious, it has the ability to carry supplies and gear. It has an air seat which is very comfortable and flexible, as well as a backrest for great support.

Despite its durability, its seat covers are very comfortable. Moreover, it has foot braces on the back so its legs are properly supported.

It is fast when it comes to speed. The 27.6 mid-width makes it easy to achieve a bullet shape, which increases speed. In the summer, when it is hot and sunny, the body is made of UV-resistant polyethylene, ensuring that it will not be damaged.

It features a paddle park compartment that can accommodate both single blade and double blade paddles. Moreover, the model incorporates an in-built rudder for enhanced directional control.

One of its shortcomings is its lack of durability. The kayak’s various pieces make it susceptible to dents and scratches, and therefore fast wear due to the process of fitting and removing things. Besides being wide, this vessel is also slow in the water. There is also no paddle included in the equipment.

The system is easy to assemble and manage. Due to its intended use, it is not very fast, which can be attributed to its slow speed. With regards to maneuverability, the model holds its own against the tandem. Both end control and initial control are very impressive when used. It remains steadied and withstands waves beautifully when used alone. And it gets better, because it has a tracking keel that allows for straight navigation.

5. The Snap Kayaks Snap-on Top

Snap Kayak is made in the United States, specifically in Syracuse, NY. It is a sit-on-top kayak that is capable of providing high performance and can be used alone or as a tandem kayak.

This kayak has a modular design, which makes it easy to assemble and disassemble for easy transport. The seat also comes with a foldable backrest, which is ideal for those traveling with a partner. Other outstanding features of the model are its contoured foot braces and cup holders.

Three sections make up this vessel, a front section measuring 69″ x 30″, a middle section measuring 67″ x 30″, and a back section measuring 38″ x 30″. The total length of the assembly is 14.5 feet when fully assembled. Built-in carry handles, paddle packs, and bottle holders complete this design. There is an area for storing gear and a drainage system as well. The storage can be divided up if separate storage is needed for certain items.

The kayak is 14.5 feet long, giving it a larger waterline length compared with other kayaks in the same category. However, this has a number of disadvantages, such as being less maneuverable in rough waters and more difficult to manage.

However, Snap Kayak is extremely fast thanks to its long waterline length. The 30″ width is also among the smallest in the industry, which results in a reduced wetted surface area, which is another speed-boosting factor. Finally, the model has a wide midsection, which is another enhanced stability feature.

The interrelationships between the parts are taken into account in the design in order to ensure that speed and stability are not affected. However, the model is mainly intended for calm waters, and therefore should not be used in rough waters. Its design lacks any rod holders, which is another downside.

The Snap Kayaks Snap-On Top solo review

Those who hunt inshore waters without protection can take advantage of its speed when fishing alone. However, this does not mean it cannot fish in offshore waters. This transporter is able to carry 100kg/220 lbs., giving you enough space for your haul.

  • Perfect for: calm waters.
  • Length: 8’10”

5. The Snap Kayaks Snap-on Top

The Scout kayak seems to offer just that in terms of power and versatility. The kayak features a patent-pending modular design that makes it easy to use in water and carry around. One of those kayaks that will allow for easy customization and scalability

Those who wish to use this kayak as a tandem can add the mid-section to it to achieve this. It’s crafted from blow-molded HTP polyethylene that’s durable and long-lasting. Weather-related damage and scratches are unlikely to cause damage to the material.

Generally, kayaks are rated by quality, with designers looking for a rigid, high-performance design and this model does not disappoint; it’s a high-quality vessel with a comfortable seat and backrest for a comfortable ride. Furthermore, its shape is unique and provides an admirable amount of stability.

Lack of drainage – no drain plug – is among the model’s limitations. Although you can flip it upside down, the water still doesn’t drain well and you have to use a towel to dry it before transporting it in your car.

The Snap Scout solo review

For solo use, the front section measures 5’9″ long while the stern section measures 3″ long, which results in an overall length of 8’8″ while maintaining an overall width of 30″. The kayak also has a comfortable seat and a backrest, just like most of the kayaks on this page.

  • Length:  8’8”
  • Width: 30”
  • Weight: 48 lbs.
  • Capacity: 265lbs

The Kayak buying guide & FAQ

Modular kayaks are those whose parts are easily separated and reassembled. They can be dismantled and reassembled in very little time without any tools. Each kayak consists of 3 sections.

You can simply snap these sections together to create a solo kayak, a two-piece kayak, a three-piece kayak, or a multi-person kayak. There are three sections: a front section, a middle section, and a back section.

It comes in two pieces when purchasing a solo modular kayak. When purchasing a tandem kayak, you will need to purchase the midsection. Like Lego blocks, the sections fit together perfectly allowing you to join as many mid-sections as you wish.

When purchasing a modular kayak, consider these features

  1. Weight capacity
  2. Length and width
  3. Sit-in vs sit-on-top
  4. Hull type
  5. Body material
  1. Weight capacity – The weight capacity of the kayak is an important consideration. Paddler’s weight and gear weight- including angler’s catch- are added together. Make sure you don’t pick one whose weight exceeds your own.
  2. Length and width – The length and width of the kayak greatly affect its speed, trajectory, stability, and maneuverability. If you need a fast kayak, choose one that is long and narrow.

If you’re looking for stability and ease of turning, you should choose a wide, short model – best for beginners. A touring kayak that can be used in big rivers, large lakes, and can withstand large waves should be at least 14-18 feet long.

If you want a recreational kayak that can maneuver through narrow inlets and passageways, you should choose one that is at least 8-15 feet long. It’s the perfect length for water that’s calm, such as small lakes, creeks, and rivers.

  1. Sit-in vs. Sit-on-top – Another important feature of modular kayaks is that you can narrow down your choice using this feature. Below are the highlights of each design.
  • Sit-in Kayaks
    • Kayaks with a sit-in design have a lower center of gravity, which makes them easy to paddle
    • It has features that protect you from wind and water. Using a waterproofing spray skirt will prevent water from getting into your boat while paddling
    • These shoes come with contoured foot braces
    • There is more storage space in most sit-in models
    • When you use a sit-in kayak, you will feel as if you are confined, but they are usually quite spacious
  • Sit-on-top Kayaks
  • Models like these are the best for fishing and recreational activities, as they are very user-friendly
  • With their open and stable design, these kayaks are easy to enter and exit
  • There are holes in most of them for easy drainage of water. They are sure to get you wet because they are open to the elements.
  • Check out “How to Kayak for Beginners” for more information on their versatility.
  • As the cockpit of the model doesn’t get very warm in such conditions, they are great for sun and warm areas
  1. The hull type –

The hull design refers to the shape of the bottom of the vessel. Kayak performance is affected by the primary stability (Initially stable when stepping in) and the secondary stability (Stability when paddling).

  • Having a rounded hull increases speed and eases travel. They give the kayak more secondary stability and greater maneuverability.
  • V-Shaped Hull – These hulls have the least amount of primary stability, but their secondary stability is exceptional. Their ease of cutting through water makes them attractive when you need to maintain a straight line. They are suitable for long distance touring and other recreational activities.
  • Hulls with flat surfaces provide great primary stability and excellent maneuverability. They are ideal for beginners.
  • Pontoon – This hull type combines the primary stability of Flat hulls and the secondary stability of Rounded hulls- very stable, but also very slow.
  1. The body material – Choosing a kayak made of durable materials is a wise decision. In addition, the material should resist fading from salty water and harsh UV rays. Kayaks constructed from low-quality material will fade rapidly, meaning their strength and ability to remain watertight will be compromised.
  • Plastic – Most modular kayaks are made from plastic. Kayaks made of polyethylene (plastic) are more resistant to water, have a longer shelf life, and are less prone to impact damage. Since the material is lightweight, towing them is easy. Nevertheless, plastic warps in hot weather, but its conformability allows the kayak to return to its original shape. A third consideration is the fact that the material can be more difficult to repair.
  • ABS thermoformed from acrylic – means that it is made up of acrylic and ABS plastic. Though more expensive, ABS thermoformed from acrylic is very durable and conformable. Plastics don’t do well in warm climates, but thermoformed ABS does. ABS’s UV resistance makes it ideal.
  • Soft Shell Kayaks – These are the least popular and are made of cloth-like material. Abrasions and punctures are less likely to occur due to the material they are made out of. Abrasions and punctures are less likely to occur due to their ease of maneuverability.
  1. Extras – To get the best out of your kayak for fishing, make sure you consider what extra gear and features you can add to it. If you are an angler, you will need to look for one with rod holders, a fish 0-meter, and GPS Mounts. Since most recreational kayaks do not come with paddles, you should look for those that do. Additional accessories to consider are foot braces, cup holders, storage, seats, pedals, fins, skegs (a stabilizing extension to the keel), backrests, and rudders.

What are the benefits of using a modular kayak?

Kayaks have many advantages which clearly outweigh the cons, which shows why you should consider using one.

Benefits

  • They can be easily modified to accommodate an additional paddler by adding a midsection
  • The cars don’t require roof racks for transportation, so they are easy to transport. You can place them in the back of your vehicle, as demonstrated in this video.
  • You don’t need to purchase a solo and tandem separately, which is a money-saving feature
  • It is easy to store modular kayaks in small spaces. These kayaks can be stored in closets or even under beds
  • Their pieces are easy to carry on your own since their weight and length are evenly distributed
  • Due to the lightweight nature of the parts, most do not require lifting aids
  • Modular kayaks are comparatively affordable: The first part of your kayak costs more than a single-piece kayak. You can also add a middle section for a lower price than a tandem kayak.

Negatives

  • Due to the constant friction during assembly, the bodies and parts are subject to wear and tear
  • The lack of proper drainage may result in water being trapped in some
  • They require additional maintenance to ensure their full functionality technologically
  • Comparatively speaking, they are expensive

What is the best way to use a kayak?

For attaching and detaching the pieces of modular kayaks, most use the same patented snap tap technology. It is designed in such a way that it can be easily installed to either the back piece or midsection.

The midsections can easily be inserted into the front and back pieces or even into another midsection. The three pieces click into place and are held together by a ratchet strap locking system that is tightened.

The modular design of the kayak has made it easy to attach and detach; it only takes a few minutes to do so.

When should it be used?

Modular kayaks can be useful in a variety of situations and applications, including:

  • Kayaking with your family is a great way to spend time together. It is possible to add midsections to accommodate an additional paddler or a baby.
  • It can also be used for fishing. Fishing gear requires more space. With the ‘Angler’ models, designers have made this easier for you. Extra spacious and rod handles make it ideal for fishing. Learn how to fish from a kayak if you’re a beginner using our “How to fish from a kayak” article.

What is the best way to carry the kayak pieces?

Lifting, loading, and carrying kayaks are some of the biggest concerns for people new to kayaking. Are kayaks easy to transport alone? Can it be loaded into my vehicle? This is especially important for women. Could you please tell me how this is done?

Carrying physical objects

As each piece can be divided between the participants, carrying different pieces will be easier. Weight is evenly distributed in the midsections, only the front and the back differ.

In order to carry the parts efficiently, especially if you are alone, you can join them and carry the single unit as shown below

  • Stand close to the kayak while it is on the ground. The edge of the kayak should be against your shins. Your cockpit should be facing the water.
  • Place both of your hands on the cockpit’s edge just close enough to your chest while kneeling
  • As you slide the vessel up onto your thighs, make sure that your knees remain bent
  • Using your right hand, grasp the other side of the cockpit rim when you are comfortable with the kayak resting on your thighs.
  • As you stand up, lift the right side of the cockpit rim onto your strong shoulder
  • Ensure that it is positioned and resting in a balanced way
  • It is now possible to walk without any of your ends touching the ground

Trampling

As an alternative, you can drag if you have a strong plastic boat.  You should note that this method is not recommended due to potential damage. You can pull the kayak by holding the toggle or grab-loop handhold at the bottom. Never drag a composite or fiberglass kayak, their hulls are fragile and will easily be damaged.

The kayak cart

These are two-wheeled carrying equipment designed specifically for kayaks. When the distance between a car and a body of water is long, these are suitable. However, the ground must be flat and not rocky. Kayak carts are foldable and they can be easily assembled and disassembled.

Taking precautions

The following are some precautions and safety measures you should follow when using a kayak:

  • If you plan to go kayaking, make sure your kayak is in good condition and your paddles are sturdy
  • Signaling devices, such as flares, should be carried. Equipment such as a bilge pump, a water bottle, as well as self-rescue aids should not be forgotten
  • Everyone should always wear a life jacket
  • Weather-appropriate clothing is essential
  • Maps, charts, and also a compass will serve as directional guides
  • Know what hypothermia is and the area where you’ll be kayaking if you’re planning to go sea kayaking. Be sure to wear appropriate clothing before heading out in cold weather.
  • Make sure you read the weather forecast to avoid foggy and windy conditions
  • Vessels on the water should be able to see you. Crossing shipping lanes at the right angle and at a fast speed is also important
  • Solo kayaking is not recommended
  • Make sure you wear protective footwear and carry a waterproof bag
  • When going into the water, carry a whistle. One whistle blow is used for alerting people and getting their attention. Three blows indicate that you are calling for assistance.
  • Make sure you have a VHF radio or a cellphone on hand – you never know when you might need to make a call
  • Carry spare paddles – they are prone to breaking, bending, or being washed away
  • Make sure you don’t exceed your boat’s weight capacity, especially if you’re using a tandem

Comparing modular kayaks with other types

Kayaks aren’t all modular; they come in a variety of models that serve different purposes. Some of these include:

Inflatable kayak

Whitewater kayak

Kayaks of this type are designed to roll easily. They typically measure up to 10 feet long. In comparison to traditional kayaks, they have rounded bottoms, making them more difficult to maneuver. However, they are great for whitewater paddling.

Surf kayak

Kayaks designed for surfing are like this one. It glides through the waves by catching and catching them. With its strong rocker and longer board, it is designed to boost surfing abilities.

A folding kayak

The inflatable kayak works similarly and is extremely easy to use. Inflatable kayaks have the advantage of being portable, convenient, and space-saving. This backpack easily fits in a backpack-sized bag once disassembled.

You get more storage space and a robust frame with this kayak than with an inflatable one. The frame is made of aluminum, which makes it more durable.
